Chief of Police Search Process
The Screening Committee is responsible for screening applications that come in, selecting up to six candidates to bring to Ithaca for interviews, setting up the process for managing the interviews, eliciting the opinions of the community about the interviewees, and making a recommendation of three final candidates to the Mayor. How the Results Can Be Used
The Screening Committee can use the results of the community input -- the nine categories and 74 detailed characteristics -- in a variety of ways:
The Screening Committee will be discussing these results with the community and deciding precisely how they will make use of these results in the remaining steps of the selection process.
- as a template for reviewing the applications and discussing their relative merits
- as a framework for helping candidates prepare for interviews (for instance, candidates could be asked to be prepared to give concrete examples of things they have done in previous work to address each category)
- as a framework for constructing a short evaluation instrument that community members can fill in about each candidate that comes to visit
- as a template for interviewing the candidates, to help assure that there is a standardized interview across candidates and to assure that no important topics are inadvertently left out of the interview process
- as a framework for their discussion of the interviewees and selection of three final candidates
