Chief of Police Search Process
45 Apply To Be Ithaca Police Chief
Candidate Deadline Today
Today is the application deadline for city police chief candidates, and the Personnel Department already has received 45 resumes -- 10 of those coming Thursday afternoon.
The Police Chief Screening Committee on Thursday continued to map out the process by which it will narrow that number to six candidates then interview them.
The committee will meet in closed session March 19 to review the applications and select the six semifinalists. In a meeting March 31, they will map out the questions they will ask of each of the candidates.
"This is where it really gets interesting," said committee member Lou Withiam. "Now is where we get into talking about the people and getting into some good arguments."
While the format for the interviews is not fully developed, the committee talked about bringing the candidates to structured all-day sessions in which they would meet individually with the screening committee and different groups of stakeholders in the city.
Mayor Alan Cohen asked the committee to keep the interviews structured to make the best use of time and to ensure that each candidate faced the same questions.
"We envisioned it being structured in a way so that every stakeholder group that felt a need to be there had the opportunity to come and ask questions," he said.
The definitions of the stakeholder groups that will interview the candidates must also be mapped by the committee.
Through a process of open forums and meetings, the committee has garnered 310 desired police chief characteristics from the community and narrowed them to 74. They then grouped them into 9 categories, ranging from "committed to diversity," to "innovative and visionary."
After the interviews of the six candidates, the committee will forward three finalists to the mayor, who will make the final selection after visiting the candidates in their home communities.
