City Police Chief Pick a Week Off

from Journal Staff Reports

Mayor Alan Cohen said Sunday the Police Chief Screening Committee would likely decide at its meeting next week whether to appoint Richard P. Basile to be the city's police chief, or to open the process and bring in more finalists.

The other finalist for the post, Coachella, Calif. chief Michael Berkow, withdrew earlier this month after accepting a job as police chief in South Pasadena.

Basile, chief of the Ellensville (sic) police force, toured Ithaca on Saturday, but did not meet with city officials for any interviews. He made the informal visit with his son and stopped at several spots including the Ithaca Farmers' Market.

Acting Chief David Barnes has headed Ithaca's force since former Chief Harlin McEwen left in February 1996 to work for the FBI. Cohen hopes to have the city's new top cop in place by mid-summer.

Before his five years in Ellensville (sic), Basile spent 18 years with the Albany Police Department and three years as the Director of Training with the state's Division of Criminal Justice Bureau for Municipal Police.
