City of Ithaca
Chief of Police Search Process

EDITORIAL
Where’s the chief?

Many workers today are in a state of transition. Good managers know the importance of creating a stable atmosphere and how an operation in flux can affect morale and productivity.

As it stands today, the Ithaca Police Department is in need of better management, in the form of a permanent police chief. Considering that the people who work for the IPD aren’t making widgets, but answering calls about shots being fired, city cops want solid leadership and direction. Acting Police Chief and Ithaca native David Barnes has done a good job for over seven months, but doesn’t want the post, which says something about itself.

The politics and finger-pointing in Ithaca can be brutal. It’s been in evidence throughout Mayor Alan Cohen’s nine-plus months in office.

A “start-up committee” met Monday to start the selection process rolling. We hope that in this venue, Common Council and the mayor can iron out their differences for the good of the department and city residents. The process needs to be open, inclusive and has to get started for real.

We’d like to see a permanent police chief early in the new year, but the longer posturing and politics dominate, the more qualified candidates will stay away from the city. That’s not good management.
