City of Ithaca
Chief of Police Search Process

A GROUP EFFORT

Police chief search committee is named; job posting is expected in January.

Almost a month late, Mayor Alan Cohen announced his choices for the police chief search screening committee in mid-December. The 12 people will review all of the applicants, choose candidates to interview and present a list of finalists to Cohen for the final choice.

The members are Joanne Farbman, Director of the Task Force for Battered Women; Ithaca Police Officer Bill Finerty; GIAC Director Marcia Fort; Keely Manning; John Raible; former alderperson Bob Romanowski; 5th Ward Alderperson Roey Thorpe; 2nd Ward Alderperson Diann Sams; Siv Somchamavong; Cecilia Vargas; Lou Withiam; and Mike Yarrow. "We really wanted representatives from all of the stakeholder groups," says Sams.

She explains that the committee came together easily. Each member of the Start-Up group offered a list of people for the selection committee, then they all compared lists. "We found that we had a lot of overlapping names - we all pretty much agreed," she says.

The current schedule for the Police Chief search calls for the job announcement to be posted this month and for the committee to begin screening applicants in mid-February. In early February the public will have an opportunity to interpret and discuss the selection criteria for the candidate. The final decision is scheduled to be made by Mayor Alan Cohen in late April.
