At Last, a Police Chief

The good news of the week is that after 18 months of uncertainty, the Ithaca Police Department will have a chief who doesn't have "acting" preceding his title.

By most accounts, Richard Basile is an open, effective leader who has already won converts here with his philosophy on modern police work: "The whole department needs to be sensitive to a community's needs, not just the community police division," says the current Village of Ellenville police chief.

Basile will have his work cut out for him in this area, but past productive experience in fighting drugs and developing youth programs will serve him well. We look forward to July 21, his first day on the job in Tompkins County.

As Basile begins his transition from Ellenville to Ithaca, it's important to offer a word of appreciation for Deputy Police Chief David Barnes who has managed the IPD since February 1996. Barnes dealt with several tough issues and situations as acting chief and he handled them with class and professionalism. The city owes Barnes a big thanks.
