Chief of Police Search Process
TITLE: POLICE CHIEF JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
LOCATION: City of Ithaca, New York
Ithaca is a multi-cultural city of 30,000 that takes pride in the diversity of its people. Ithaca is also home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, who collectively have a student population of 22,000.
QUALITIES BEING SOUGHT:
The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about modern police procedures, able to establish rapport with the police force, dedicated to the on-going training and development of the department, a strong creative leader who is able to work collaboratively with staff, city representatives and the diverse communities and cultures within the Ithaca area. The candidate should be a good communicator and listener, familiar with anti-bias training and community policing, and committed to diversifying the staff.
DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Ithaca police force has a staff of 76 sworn officers and 19 support personnel and a $4.7 million budget.
SALARY OF PREVIOUS CHIEF: $70,142
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must have at least seven years of law enforcement experience, two of which must have been in an administrative/managerial capacity holding the rank of Lieutenant or its equivalent.
- Applicants must have been appointed as a Police Officer from an eligible list established pursuant to New York State Civil Service Law, or have previously served as a member of the New York State Police.
