City of Ithaca
Chief of Police Search Process
The mayor announced today the appointment of Ellenville, N.Y. Police Chief Richard Basile as the City of Ithaca's next Chief of Police. Basile is scheduled to start work July 21.After confering with Common Council, the mayor made an offer, which Basile accepted, for a salary of $70,000. Former Chief Harlan McEwen left in the beginning of 1996 at a salary of $70,142.
"I am extremely pleased with the selection of Chief Basile," stated Mayor Cohen. "He is a seasoned law enforcement officer whose priorities dovetail with the needs of our community. He believes in public outreach, diversity, and a strong, consistent law enforcement effort based on community policing. He is a strong and fair leader who has always enjoyed staunch loyalty from his subordinates."
Chief Basile was one of two finalists put forth to the mayor by the screening committee. His appointment is the final step in a process that began last fall. Community meetings were held to determine what characteristics the community wanted in its next chief. A demographically representative screening committee was formed to oversee the search process, which included interviews involving over 100 people representing 19 different stakeholder groups in the community.
"I am grateful to Concept Systems for getting us started, to all the community members who participated in the process, and particularly to the members of the screening committee for all their efforts," stated Cohen. "The committee's complex and time-consuming task was attended to with dedication and a high degree of professionalism."
Chief Basile can be reached for comment at (914) 647-4422.
