October, 1996
The Mayor appoints the Start-Up Committee which will select the members of screening committee.

November 18th, 1996
The first community Brainstorming Forum is held at Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, at 7:30 PM, in order to provide City of Ithaca participants with an opportunity to brainstorm the characteristics they’d like to see in the next chief of police.

December 10th, 1996
The second community Brainstorming Forum is held at Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, at 7:30 PM, in order to provide City of Ithaca participants with another opportunity to brainstorm the characteristics they’d like to see in the next chief of police.

Mid-December, 1996
Mayor appoints the Screening Committee that was selected by the Start-Up Committee and will be responsible for screening candidates and reporting the final three to the Mayor.

Early January, 1997
Job Announcement for the position of Chief of Police for the City of Ithaca is written. Distribution begins.

January 22, 1997
The community Idea Organizing Forum is held at at a still-to-be decided location, and allows participants to organize and rate the importance of the previously defined chief of police characteristics.

February 10, 1997
The community Interpretation Forum This community forum will be held at Southside Community Center and will enable the community to interpret and discuss the implications of the selection criteria developed by the community, and to give input on the Candidate Evaluation Form that will be developed to assess candidates when they come for interviews.

March-April, 1997
Preliminary Screening of Chief of Police candidates by the screening committee. Pool of candidates is reduced to no more than six.

April-May, 1997
Candidate Interviews take place. For each of the (up to six) candidates there will be public forums and private interviews with the Screening Committee. Members of the Community and the Screening Committee will use the Candidate Evaluation Form to record their views of each candidate.

May 22, 1997
Final Candidate Recommendations. The Screening Committee recommends final candidates to Mayor Cohen. The Screening Committee will be given a complete analysis of the information gathered from the community through the Candidate Evaluation Forms.
Early to Mid-June, 1997Final Candidate Community Visits. The communities of the final candidates are visited by representatives of the City of Ithaca.
Early July, 1997Final Selection is made by Mayor Cohen and announced to the public.
