The Workout!!!

"Today we are going to do 15 - 100 meter all-out sprints, followed by five minutes of jumping rope.

After a three minute break we will perform fifteen minutes of full-court dribbling and lay-ups (this is based on a game developed in Springfield, Massachusetts. It involves running up and down the gym while bouncing a ball. Upon reaching each end you attempt to "shoot" the ball through a ring mounted 10 feet above you )."

Before you say "forget this" you may ask "why?". Well other than being a good workout, there is in fact a purpose for these exercises. I theorize that by performing this "grueling" program you will increase your speed, agility, and basketball skills.

The "grueling" program is the treatment and the hopeful increase in speed, agility, and basketball skills is the effect.

Six weeks later . . .

You are in great anaerobic shape but has this workout done what I thought it would?

"Today we will be doing something different. Everyone will do one 100 meter all out sprint while being timed. You will then perform side-steps between marked lines for one minute and the lines you cross will be counted. Finally you will dribble the basketball and make as many shots as possible from the marked locations."

Let's get started. . . .

At this point I am dealing in the observational realm. Specifically I am taking each item (trait) from the program and observing or testing for the effects. This particular measure is a performance test as you are executing specific tasks and will be judged by your performance on these items.

Now that you've showered and changed I have another favor to ask of you.

"Please take a pencil and sit at a desk. I am passing out an evaluation form and would like you to fill it out being as honest as you can. This evaluation is totally anonymous and is only an attempt to measure the overall level of everyone's feelings of performance".

Again I am in the observational realm. In this test you performing a self-evaluation as to your perceived level of agility, speed, and basketball skills.

Now you can rest until basketball trials start (which happens to be a whole TWO DAYS!!!!). Without your knowledge, on the day before the final measure I observed your class and evaluated each person's performance with regards to agility, speed, and basketball skills. This is called a direct observation measurement of the program's effects.

While you're resting on day one, I will be compiling the results of all this information ( though I probably won't finish until the end of basketball season!). "

O.K. I have all this information - what do I do now?

It is time to employ the

Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix.

(FINALLY!!).

To summarize there are:

I now can take these items and design a framework of our matrix:
